advise有不一样的语义。当advise作建议、忠告解时，that从句用虚拟语气（谓语动词用原型或should do)。此时advise为单宾语动词，that从句前不可以加间接宾语。这是中国英语教学中教过的使用方法，一般大伙都知道。
但advise还有一种意义，即表示公告、告知的意思，意义上等于inform。这是正式用词。这种意义的advise后接双宾语，advise sbthat从句。因为语义上that从句是告知的事实，所以that从句没理由用虚拟语气，而是用陈述语气。以下为牛津词典的解释和例句：
